Over the last 70 years there have been changes in attitudes toward social, political and communal areas of life. The goal of the Holocaust survivor generation was to regenerate. That generation gave birth to children focused on creating safety and comfort. The lesson for the children of this generation became tinged with entitlement. Survivors envy grandchildren’s comfort, but there is concern regarding the strength needed to survive. This session will encourage input from participants.

With Marc Soloway (Conservative), Gavriel Goldfeder (Orthodox), and Josh Rose (Reform). Each of these rabbis grew up with a Judaism different from the one they now practice. In addition, as they matured in their understanding of Judaism, they also came to question the denominational boundaries each one, in theory, today represents. In this moderated panel, they will discuss how the Judaism they grew up with became the Judaism they now practice, what was lost and gained in the transition, how the movements they find themselves in now have changed, and why, despite their challenges to the very idea of denominations, they remain in those movements.

Using examples from his book "A Dialectic of the Hebrew Language," he will show people how to think "paradoxically." There are many Hebrew words that contain contradictory meanings. They provide software for the brain to think in a more balanced way. This in turn connects to many ideas in the Torah that can help people mature on a path of personal Teshuvah. For instance, how can a person believe in total free choice and total Hashgachah, divine microsupervision of every detail simultaneously?

The idea of entering Pardes was originally a meditative ascension described in the Talmud and later in Hechalot meditative texts. PARDES came to be used as an acronym for levels of interpretation: Peshat (simple meaning), Remez (symbolic meaning), Drash (homiletic meaning) and Sod (kabbalistic meaning). We will learn and discuss a text to illustrate these different levels of understanding to help guide educators in using the Pardes method to deepen and enrich any learning experience.
