How do we as Jews understand and reckon with mental illness? Our society tends to equate one’s identity with the functioning of his or her rational mind. Yet statistics point to the growing prevalence of mental disorders, from Alzheimer’s to depression. This session will be an interactive discussion of how we might de-stigmatize and bring compassion to those with mental illness. Conversation will be structured around Jewish texts, including the command to “welcome the stranger.”
